Our Vision: Building on Research and Training for Wildlife Conservation
In the Anthropocene era, ecosystems worldwide are subject to significant anthropogenic impacts, including
pollution, deforestation, climate change, and antibiotic resistance. These challenges threaten wildlife through
habitat loss, lack of corridors, poaching, disease outbreaks, and dwindling resources. Predicting wildlife
responses to global changes is vital for designing effective conservation interventions and prioritizing resource
use. Insights into adaptability, resistance, and resilience are key to ensuring wildlife survival.
Our Vision
To help build resilience in wildlife through the following focus areas:
1.
Understanding Adaptability
- Probe into the challenges faced by wildlife in their natural habitats through basic research.
- Analyze biotic and abiotic stressors responsible for pressure on various species.
- Apply veterinary research to understand how wildlife responds and adapts to these challenges.
2.
Contributing to Conservation Breeding
- Design scientific methodologies for conservation breeding of endangered wildlife.
- Utilize Assisted Reproductive Techniques (ART) to aid conservation efforts.
- Preserve germ cells and tissues for endangered species conservation.
3.
Health Care and Management in Wildlife
- Establish a center of excellence in wild animal health care to address diverse challenges.
- Develop facilities for trauma and critical care, along with rehabilitation care for wildlife.
- Validate and implement scientific captive management practices to ensure the well-being of wildlife in
captivity.
- Understand zoonotic diseases in wildlife and develop countermeasures.
4.
Molecular Biology and Application-Based Research
- Develop expertise in molecular biology, forensics, and DNA technology to support conservation efforts.
- Create reliable and cost-effective technologies for diagnosing wild animal diseases.
- Advance translational research on wildlife diseases and disease models.
5.
Training Hub for Wildlife Conservation Disciplines
- Develop a knowledge hub for capacity building and resource development across wildlife conservation
disciplines.
6.
Awareness and Extension Initiatives
- Leverage veterinary expertise to raise awareness about wildlife conservation and the environment.
- Sensitize the general public to the importance of conserving wildlife and ecosystems.
