History of WRTC

The Wildlife Research & Training Centre (WRTC), Gorewada, Nagpur, was established through the collaborative efforts of the Maharashtra Animal & Fishery Sciences University, Nagpur, and the Forest Development Cooperation of Maharashtra Ltd., Nagpur. The aim is to enhance wildlife conservation efforts through scientific research, training, and forensic investigations. Over the years, WRTC has become a pivotal institution, supporting forest departments, law enforcement agencies, and conservationists in safeguarding India's rich biodiversity.

• Treatment, rescue, and rehabilitation of wildlife.

1. Species Identification

• Identification of seized animal parts (bones, skins, claws, teeth, feathers, etc.).
• DNA-based confirmation of species origin.
• Morphological analysis for rapid identification.

2. Sex Identification

• Genetic sexing of wildlife samples.
• Identification of male vs. female in confiscated specimens.

3. Individual Identification

• DNA fingerprinting to distinguish individuals.
